How to Remove the Jeep Wrangler Doors & Top
Everyone loves the open-air freedom promised by the Jeep Wrangler -- but you'll never know what this classic Jeep 4x4 experience feels like if you don't first learn how to remove the Wrangler doors and top. Luckily, the process couldn't be more straightforward, especially as Jeep provides all the tools necessary to complete removal and reassembly right at home.
Below, our Jeep dealer near Rindge has spelled out all the steps to remove a Jeep Wrangler soft top, hardtop or doors. Note that these same processes may also work on the Gladiator, which shares the same overarching door and roof hardware as the Wrangler. We've only referenced the latter model to help eliminate any confusion. For more information, please visit our showroom or speak to a team member.
How to Remove Jeep Wrangler Hardtop
There are several roof options for the 2025 Jeep Wrangler, but one of the most popular is the 3-piece Freedom Top® Hardtop, which features three easy-to-handle sections that can be individually removed. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to remove a Jeep Wrangler hardtop:
For each of the two front roof panels:
- Lower the sun visors and release the L-shaped latches by twisting them 90 degrees. Release the center latches first, then the outboard ones.
- Unlatch the spring-loaded header panel clasp.
- Push up on the panel to remove it. Hold it as a waiter holds a food tray and guide it over the fixed roof rail. Use your free hand to grab the panel once it has cleared the roof rail and stow it away safely.
For the rear portion of the top:
- Open the rear tailgate and lift the rear glass up.
- Use the provided #50 Torx driver to release the hardtop's two front screws, located near the top of each front door.
- Use the same driver to release the six screws -- three on driver's side, three on the passenger side -- that secure the top in the cargo area.
- Release the wiring harness pigtail leading into the top from the cargo area by pushing down on the release tab and pulling the pigtail straight down and out of its socket.
- Disconnect the rear windshield washer hose by pressing the release button and pulling down the hose.
- Close the tailgate but leave the rear window in the up position.
- With the help of a friend or two, lift up on the top and carefully carry it off and away from the vehicle.
For reinstallation, simply follow these steps in reverse order.
How to Remove Jeep Wrangler Soft Top
What's more a quintessential 4x4 than a soft-top Jeep Wrangler? The beauty of this top style is its lightweight construction, quick fold-back design and classic aesthetics. If you'd like to remove your soft top -- and many New Hampshire Jeep owners do just this when they switch over to a hardtop for the winter months -- the process is easy. Here's how to do it:
- Fully fold back the soft top.
- Move the lift assist tabs into the lock position. Be sure to do this on both sides of the vehicle.
- Secure the hook-and-loop fasteners around the linkage.
- Push down on the folded top, then pull it gently upward to confirm it is locked in its lowermost position.
- Use the provided #40 Torx driver to release the screws on each lift-assist mechanism. Lift each mechanism up and away from the vehicle.
- Push the release lever on each of the upper side rails to free them from their track.
- With the help of a friend, carefully lift the entire soft top up and away from the vehicle.
- Lastly, use the #50 Torx driver to remove the rear retainers that secured the top's base to the vehicle.
For reinstallation, simply follow these steps in reverse order. Note that, depending on what top had previously been installed, there may be additional parts to reattach, such as the front and rear door frame rails.
How to Remove Jeep Wrangler Doors
Being able to leave the doors behind is one of the best parts about owning a Wrangler -- and because the brand has made removal so easy, there's no reason not to stash them in your garage at every opportunity. The removal process for the front and rear doors differs slightly, so let's look at each separately.
For how to remove the Jeep Wrangler front doors:
- Use the #50 Torx driver to remove the screws that hold the door's two hinge pins. Note that the screw head faces downward, toward the ground.
- Slide the access panel cover found underneath the dashboard straight back to remove it and gain access to the wiring harness pigtail.
- Unhook the fabric strap that helps secure the pigtail's wire bundle.
- Push the red locking tab on the harness upward.
- Push down on the security tab while lifting the harness lever up.
- With the harness lever up, pull the harness straight down to release it. Pull it free from the access panel and store it in the lower door basket.
- Use the #40 Torx driver to remove the screw from the door's check arm.
- Lift the door straight up from the hinge pins.
For how to remove the Jeep Wrangler rear doors:
- Use the #50 Torx driver to remove the screws that hold the door's two hinge pins. Note that the screw head faces downward, toward the ground.
- Slide the front seat all the way forward.
- In the rear passenger compartment, remove the cover to the access panel that's built into the interior pillar between the front and rear doors to access the wiring harness pigtail.
- Unhook the fabric strap that helps secure the pigtail's wire bundle.
- Remove the pigtail by pressing the release tab and pulling straight down. Pull it free from the access panel and store it in the lower door basket.
- Use the #40 Torx driver to remove the screw from the door's check arm.
- Lift the door straight up from the hinge pins.
For reinstallation, simply follow these steps in reverse order.
